Akamon Gate (“Red Gate”)

Let’s Open the Akamon Gate Together!

The Akamon (“Red Gate”), built in 1827 by the Maeda clan to welcome Princess Yōhime of the Tokugawa family, is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property and a symbol of the University of Tokyo.

In 2023, remains of a historic stone-lined ditch marking the boundary of the Kaga estate and Nakasendō were discovered nearby. The UTCC building, a red-brick structure from 1910, which stands next to the Akamon is among the oldest on campus.
The Akamon is currently closed due to seismic concerns. The University’s 150th Anniversary Committee plans to reinforce and reopen it, create a small plaza, and shape the surroundings into a historic zone where people can gather and experience both tradition and innovation.
In 2027, as the University turns 150, the Akamon turns 200. With your support, the gate can reopen as a “gateway to the next 150 years”, welcoming people from around the world.
